Intumescent coatings expand under heat and char, insulating the steel beneath so it holds its load for the fire rating the design calls for.
The protection is in the thickness, so the applied dry film thickness is measured section by section and recorded against the specification. That record, with the product data, is what the certification documentation is built from.
